Spring Equinox

1The spring equinox will take place on March 20th in 2015. ‘Equinox’ is a Latin word, meaning ‘equal night’; therefore an equinox signifies a moment when the length of day and night are almost equal.

During the course of a year, the Earth completes one orbit around the sun. When the sun is crossing the celestial equator (the projection of the equator in the sky), the Earth’s equator and the centre of the sun are directly aligned. Day and night are of nearly equal length, creating universal balance and harmony.

The direction of the sun on the Spring Equinox is upward (northern hemisphere), so it is a time to rise with the rhythms of nature; light and lifted towards a deep sky and golden sun.

2Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system of Vedic traditions, meaning life~knowledge. It is a medieval form of alternative medicines: herbs, diet, yoga, oils and massage and many others. Remedies are diagnosed according to the unique elemental constitutions of individuals: vata (air), pitta (fire), kapha (earth). Ayurveda also considers the seasons, the moon and natural rhythms of life, seeking individual and universal equilibrium.

Ayurveda would suggest that our element of earth, kapha, is strongest through the winter months, as the sun, the world, our energies are turning Earthward. The same element dominates March ~ May, as earth is responsible for new growth and life. We should seek to balance this element with movement and motion, opening and blossoming our hearts to the sky; balancing the element of kapha (earth) with its opposing energy, Vata (air). Our bodies and being expansive like the flowers of spring. A diet of leafy vegetables, lentils, lemon, ginger, coriander, basil, cumin and other spices are also recommended.

3We are an integral part of the beauty, bounty and colour of life and should seek to flow within the natural rhythm of the seasons and cycles of life. See the colour of the world through the light of your soul; open your heart to the soul of the sky; smile and shine towards the golden sun.

Rise with the energy of the sun this Spring Equinox.
